Not a border question. A human one.

Agenda

Combating the Exploitation of Migrants, with Focus on Smuggling Networks, Labor Abuse, and State Responsibility in Protection Mechanisms.

The issue before this committee is not merely one of border management or migration policy — it is fundamentally a question of human rights, international responsibility, and humanitarian accountability.

Chairperson’s Addressal

Distinguished Delegates,

Welcome to the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) at the twelfth edition of the Daly College Model United Nations. It is indeed an honor to welcome you all to this committee as a representative of the Executive Board. I would like to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the Executive Board comprising Vice-Chair Netika Chaudhary and Rapporteurs Maanvi Redhu and Vedika Toshniwal.

Our agenda, “Combating the Exploitation of Migrants, with a Focus on Smuggling Networks, Labour Abuse, and State Responsibility in Protection Mechanisms,” addresses one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges of our time. Migration is a burning issue in today’s world, with millions of people forced to uproot their lives every year due to war, natural disasters, economic and political instability, and climate change.

This has resulted in the exploitation of migrants through human trafficking, smuggling networks, and labour abuse. There is a pressing need to combat such exploitation at the international level through effective policies and resolutions while ensuring state accountability for the protection of migrants. As delegates to this committee, it is your responsibility to discuss these issues and work towards practical solutions.

Whether this is your first Model UN conference or your fifteenth, I urge you all to participate wholeheartedly and make this committee a success. Come prepared, debate with enthusiasm, and leave a lasting impression through your ideas and diplomacy.

It would be a pleasure to meet all of you and witness your work throughout the committee sessions. I wish you all the very best, and I hope to see you soon.

Best wishes,

Swasti Tiwari · Chairperson, SOCHUM
